The 2 October Long Weekend: Where to Go and When to Book

Gandhi Jayanti in 2026 falls on Friday, 2 October. Three clear days, a national holiday that everyone actually gets, and — usefully — a date that lands right at the point where the monsoon has finished and the good travel season has not properly started.

It is the best-value long weekend of the year for exactly that reason: the weather has turned and the festival pricing has not.

By drive time from the major cities

From Mumbai and Pune

Lonavala is the default and will be busy. Karjat is greener and better value for groups above twenty. Igatpuri is at the tail end of its best season. For something quieter, Alibaug and Raigad on the coast, or Matheran and Panchgani in the hills.

From Delhi NCR

Jaipur and Udaipur both come into season in October, and early October is before the Rajasthan winter pricing starts. Closer in, Gurugram and Noida have the largest farmhouse inventory in the country if the plan is a day out rather than a trip.

From Gujarat

Saputara in the Dangs is at its best immediately after the rain, and Gir Somnath matters because Gir National Park reopens in October after the monsoon closure. Daman and Navsari for the coast.

From Hyderabad and the south

Moinabad for a local weekend, or Goa and Mysore if the three days justify a longer drive.

Booking notes for a three-day weekend

• Two nights, not one. The whole point of the extra day is not spending it in a car. Book Friday and Saturday nights and drive back on Sunday afternoon.
• Watch the weekend pricing definition. Some properties treat Friday as a weekday rate and some do not. On a long weekend that is a real difference, and it is worth asking rather than assuming.
• Expect the drive out to be slow. Every long weekend, the Friday morning exodus from Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru adds hours. Leaving Thursday night, where possible, is the single biggest quality-of-life improvement available.
• Check pool availability rather than assuming. A few properties drain and service pools at the end of the monsoon, and early October is exactly when that happens.

Three ways to use the three days

The proper trip

Two nights somewhere three to five hours out, where the drive is justified by the destination being genuinely different. Udaipur from Delhi or Ahmedabad, Gir Somnath from Surat, Goa from Pune. This is what the weekend is for, and it needs the earliest booking.

The close-in reset

One or two nights within ninety minutes, chosen for the property rather than the place — a villa with a pool, a good kitchen and nothing to do. Most of our villa inventory is built for exactly this, and it is the easiest booking to get at short notice because everyone else is thinking about destinations.

The day out, twice

Underrated. Two separate day bookings — one with the extended family, one with friends — costs less than a single two-night stay in most markets and pleases more people. Day slots also stay available far later than overnights.

If it is already booked out

Three fallbacks that reliably work. Look one destination further out — Palghar instead of Karjat, Faridabad instead of Gurugram, Anand instead of Ahmedabad. Take the Sunday–Monday rather than the Friday–Saturday, which most groups will not. Or convert the trip into a day booking, which is both cheaper and far more available.

And if none of that works, the next opportunity is close: Navratri's closing weekend runs Friday 16 to Monday 19 October, and Dussehra follows on the 20th.

What early October is like on the ground

The reason this weekend works is meteorological rather than sentimental, and it is worth being specific about what changes.

The monsoon withdraws from most of central and western India through late September. What that leaves in the first fortnight of October is unusual: the landscape is still fully green from four months of rain, the rivers and waterfalls are still running, and the sky has cleared. In the Western Ghats this is the two-week window when you get the monsoon scenery without the monsoon weather.

Temperatures drop noticeably in the hills and only slightly in the plains — Jaipur and Udaipur are pleasant by day rather than cool, and will not be genuinely cold until November. On the coast, Daman and Goa are still humid.

The single practical change most people notice: pools become usable again. From roughly the first week of October the water is warm, the rain has stopped, and the amenity everybody paid for in June is finally worth having.

Booking a long weekend well

• Check how the property defines a weekend rate. Some treat Friday as a weekday and some do not. On a Friday public holiday that is a real difference and worth asking rather than assuming.
• Two nights, not one. The whole value of the third day is not spending it driving. Friday and Saturday nights, back Sunday afternoon.
• Leave Thursday night if you possibly can. Every long weekend produces the same Friday-morning exodus from Mumbai, Delhi, Pune and Bengaluru. Three hours becomes five.
• Confirm the pool is in service. A few properties drain and service pools at the end of the monsoon, and early October is exactly when that happens.
• Book the return around Sunday traffic. Leaving a destination at two gets you home; leaving at five gets you home much later.
