Lonavala to Mahabaleshwar Distance: Routes, Time, Stops and a Two Hill Station Trip

Lonavala to Mahabaleshwar is about 175–190 km: routes via Pune and Wai or the Konkan, time, stops, bus and train, and a combined trip plan.

Lonavala to Mahabaleshwar is about 175–190 km by road on the usual route through Pune, NH48 and the Wai–Panchgani ghat, a drive of about 4 to 4.5 hours in normal traffic. You will sometimes see a figure of 120–130 km quoted; that is roughly the distance from Pune to Mahabaleshwar, not from Lonavala. This guide gives the route options with distances and times, the stops worth making on the way, how to do the trip by bus or train, the best time to go, and how to combine Maharashtra's two best-known hill stations in one trip.

Distances are approximate, from Lonavala town to Mahabaleshwar market. Times assume normal traffic and do not include stops; add an hour or more on weekends and holidays, when Pune, the Khambatki ghat and the Panchgani–Mahabaleshwar road slow down.

Panchgani to MahabaleshwarAbout 18–20 kmPast Mapro Garden at Gureghar

If you are starting from the Malavli or Kamshet side of Lonavala, the old highway through Talegaon is often just as quick as the Expressway to reach the Pune bypass. Keep your FASTag topped up for the Expressway and NH48 tolls.

    Lonavala to Panchgani distance

Panchgani is on the way, about 160–170 km from Lonavala, roughly 3.5 to 4 hours. Many travellers stay in Panchgani instead of Mahabaleshwar, as it is a little lower and drier, with Table Land and the Krishna valley viewpoints, and Mahabaleshwar is only about 30 to 45 minutes further.

The Konkan route via Mahad and the Ambenali ghat

The alternative from Lonavala goes down the Khandala ghat to Khopoli, then south through Pali or Kolad to the Mumbai–Goa highway near Mahad, on to Poladpur, and up the Ambenali ghat to Mahabaleshwar. It is slower but beautiful, especially after the monsoon, and passes near the Pali Ballaleshwar temple and Raigad. The Ambenali ghat is narrow and has been closed after landslides in heavy rain, so check road status before choosing it from June to September.

    • Pasarni ghat: views over the Krishna valley and the Dhom reservoir; stop only at proper viewpoints, not on the bends.
    • Panchgani: Table Land, the broad flat-topped plateau above the town, and viewpoints such as Sydney Point and Parsi Point.
    • Mapro Garden, Gureghar: strawberry products, sandwiches and ice cream between Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar; busy on weekends.

Mahabaleshwar is higher and cooler, with a more classic hill-station feel; Lonavala is closer, easier for a weekend, and at its best in the monsoon. Mahabaleshwar receives extremely heavy monsoon rain, and some of its viewpoints, boating and businesses scale down or close from about June to September, so the two hill stations suit different seasons.

Best time for a Lonavala and Mahabaleshwar trip

    • October to February: the best time for both, with pleasant weather, clear views and comfortable drives. Winter is also strawberry season in Mahabaleshwar, roughly from December into spring.
    • March to May: Mahabaleshwar is a classic summer escape; Lonavala is warmer but fine for pool villas.
    • June to September: Lonavala is at its best, but Mahabaleshwar is very wet and partly shut down, and ghat roads on both routes can be hit by landslides. Combine them in the monsoon only if you enjoy rain.
