Sharad Navratri in 2026 begins on Sunday, 11 October and runs to Monday, 19 October, with Dussehra following on Tuesday, 20 October. Nine nights, two weekends inside them, and a Monday–Tuesday tail that a lot of people will take as leave.
In Gujarat this is not a festival you plan a trip around — it is a festival that reorganises the entire month. Understanding what it does to accommodation demand is the difference between booking in September and finding nothing in October.
What actually happens to demand
Three distinct things, and they pull in opposite directions. The first is that a large part of the local population is out every night at garba, which suppresses ordinary weekend farmhouse bookings around Surat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Rajkot during the nine nights themselves. Nobody drives forty minutes out of town for a Saturday afternoon when they will be dancing until two. The second is that families spread across cities come home for Navratri, and those reunions need somewhere to happen. Day bookings for large family gatherings go up sharply, particularly around the first weekend and around Dussehra. The third — and this is the one people miss — is that the week immediately after Dussehra, once the garba stops, sees a surge. Everyone who has spent nine nights out wants a quiet weekend, and the weather in late October is the best of the year. That week is harder to book than the festival itself.

The dates worth marking

Where to look, by city
Surat
The largest Gujarat inventory at fifty-six properties. For a Navratri family gathering, the belts that work are Kamrej and Sevani — close enough that guests can get back into town for garba in the evening, which is the deciding factor for most local bookings. The family get-together collection is the shortest route.
Ahmedabad
Thirteen properties, spread thin. Sanand is the nearest thing to a cluster and it books out first. Given how few options there are, Ahmedabad is the city where booking early matters most.
Vadodara and Rajkot
Smaller markets — six and three properties respectively — but also markets where far fewer people are searching. Vadodara's Padra side is genuinely good value, with a median well below the state average.
Gandhinagar
Three properties, useful as an overflow for Ahmedabad and rarely thought of.
Three booking notes specific to Navratri
- Check the sound and timing rules carefully. If any part of your plan involves music at the property rather than at a garba ground, the 10:00 PM cut-off that many properties enforce will matter.
- Confirm the food arrangement early. Navratri fasting means a large share of your guests may be eating farali food, which is a specific catering requirement. Properties that permit outside food give you the most flexibility; several Gujarat properties are vegetarian-only in any case, which for this fortnight is usually an advantage.
- Book the day slot, not the night. Most Navratri gatherings are lunches or afternoons that end before the evening's garba. Searching on day capacity opens up properties that a sleeping-capacity filter would hide.
The practical advice
If your gathering is during Navratri or in the fortnight after it, book now. Mid-September is the last comfortable window; by the first week of October the good properties in Surat and Ahmedabad are gone, and what remains is what was left for a reason. And if you are flexible, look at the last week of October rather than the festival weekends. The weather is at its best, prices have not yet moved into the Diwali band, and you get the properties that everyone else was fighting over a fortnight earlier.

What a Navratri booking usually needs
Four requirements come up again and again, and they are not the ones a general search filters for.
- Farali catering. A large share of guests will be fasting, and farali food is a specific requirement rather than a variation on the menu. Properties that permit outside food give you the most room; those with in-house catering need a fortnight's notice.
- An early finish. Most gatherings end by six so people can get back and change. A full-day slot running to nine at night is money spent on hours nobody uses — ask which slot windows the property offers rather than assuming there are only two.
- Shade rather than a pool. Mid-October in Gujarat is still warm at two in the afternoon. Covered seating does more work than the swimming pool on this particular booking.

The cities in order of difficulty

Ahmedabad is the difficult one. Thirteen properties for a city of that size, spread across twelve areas with no real cluster. On a Navratri weekend it is effectively sold out early, and the fallbacks — Gandhinagar and Anand — are small too.
Surat is the easiest of the large markets. Fifty-six properties across fifteen belts means something is almost always left, even if it is not in Kamrej.
Vadodara and Rajkot are the quiet ones. Six and three properties respectively, but far fewer people searching. Vadodara in particular is the cheapest market in Gujarat, and the Padra side is genuinely good value.
The general rule for this fortnight: widen the geography before you compromise on the property. An extra thirty minutes of driving buys considerably more than settling for a place that does not fit the group.
The gap between Navratri and Diwali
The two festivals sit close together in 2026 and the stretch between them is worth understanding, because it is when most of the year's Gujarat bookings happen. Dussehra falls on Tuesday 20 October. Dhanteras is Friday 6 November and Diwali itself Sunday 8 November. That leaves roughly two and a half weeks in between — and it is the busiest continuous booking period of the Gujarat calendar. Three things happen at once. The post-garba recovery weekend of 23–25 October takes the overnight bookings that were suppressed during the nine nights. The wedding season begins, and it competes for exactly the large-capacity properties that families want. And Diwali planning starts in earnest, with the properties that permit firecrackers going first. The practical consequence is that a property you can get on a week's notice in September will need three to four weeks' notice in late October.
