Places to Visit in Udaipur: 32 Tourist Places & Things to Do (2026 List)

The complete list of places to visit in Udaipur: lakes, palaces, temples, sunset points and markets, with circuits, timings, who each place suits and where to stay.

Udaipur is the city of lakes: seven of them inside and around a city of palaces, ghats and old havelis, set in the green Aravalli hills of southern Rajasthan. It was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II as the new capital of Mewar, and almost everything worth seeing still sits around the lakes he and his successors built. This guide lists 30 places to visit in Udaipur, grouped by type, with how long each one takes, the best time of day to go and how to fit them into a trip. At the end you will find where to stay, from private pool villas near the lakes to farmhouses in the hills.

If you only have a short trip, the five places almost everyone should see are the City Palace, a boat ride on Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar Lake, the Monsoon Palace (Sajjangarh) at sunset and the evening folk dance show at Bagore ki Haveli.

Top 10 places to visit in Udaipur

    1. City Palace: the largest palace complex in Rajasthan, on Lake Pichola.
    2. Lake Pichola boat ride: the classic Udaipur view, best before sunset.
    3. Jag Mandir: the island palace in Lake Pichola.
    4. Bagore ki Haveli: a haveli museum with an evening folk dance show.
    5. Jagdish Temple: the grand 17th-century temple in the old city.
    6. Fateh Sagar Lake: evenings, boating and street food.
    7. Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace): the best sunset view over the city.
    8. Saheliyon ki Bari: fountains and gardens from the 18th century.
    9. Ambrai Ghat: the City Palace lit up after dark.
    10. Badi Lake and Bahubali Hills: quiet water and a hilltop viewpoint outside the city.

    What is Udaipur famous for?

Udaipur is famous for its lakes, which is why it is called the City of Lakes, and for the palaces built on and around them: the City Palace, the Lake Palace and Jag Mandir. It is also known for its romantic sunsets, its old havelis and ghats, Mewari history and the story of Maharana Pratap, miniature painting, bandhani textiles, and as one of India's favourite wedding destinations.

    Lakes of Udaipur

    1. Lake Pichola

Lake Pichola is the heart of the city. The City Palace runs along its eastern shore, the Lake Palace hotel floats in the middle on Jag Niwas island, and Jag Mandir sits on its own island to the south. A boat ride is the classic Udaipur experience. Boats leave from the jetties near the City Palace and from a few ghats; the late-afternoon departures give you the best light on the palace walls and the chance to see the sunset from the water. Weekends and holidays get crowded, so book in the morning for an evening slot.

    2. Jag Mandir

Jag Mandir is a 17th-century island palace of white marble and yellow sandstone, with a courtyard, gardens and a row of stone elephants at the water's edge. Some boat rides stop here so you can walk around the island and have tea at the café before the return trip.

    3. Fateh Sagar Lake

North of Pichola and joined to it by a canal, Fateh Sagar is where the city spends its evenings. The road along the dam, often called the Fateh Sagar Pal, is lined with food stalls, ice-cream carts and camel rides. Boats go out to Nehru Garden, an island garden in the middle of the lake. It is lively, safe and easy with children.

    4. Badi Lake

Badi Lake, also called Tiger Lake, is about 12 km from the old city in the hills to the north-west. It is calmer and greener than the city lakes, with chhatris on the hill above the water and wide sunset views. Several of our villas are close by: see stays near Badi Lake and villas in Amberi.

    5. Udai Sagar Lake

Udai Sagar, about 13 km east of the city, is the lake Maharana Udai Singh II built first, before the city itself. It sees few tourists and is a quiet stop on the way to or from the airport.

    6. Doodh Talai

Doodh Talai is a small lake right next to Pichola, with a musical garden, a sunset point and the lower station of the Karni Mata ropeway. It is a good place to start an evening.

    7. Swaroop Sagar and Goverdhan Sagar

These smaller lakes connect the main water system. They are not destinations on their own, but the bridges and lakeside roads between them make for a pleasant early-morning walk or drive.

    Palaces, havelis and forts

    8. City Palace

The City Palace is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan, built over about four centuries by successive Maharanas of Mewar. Inside you walk through courtyards, mirror-work rooms, painted chambers and balconies over Lake Pichola, with a museum of royal objects along the way. Go at opening time to beat the crowds and the heat, and give it at least two to three hours. Part of the complex is still the royal family's residence and part is a heritage hotel, so not every wing is open.

    9. The Lake Palace (Jag Niwas)

The white palace in the middle of Lake Pichola is now a luxury hotel and is open only to its guests. You see it best from a boat, from the City Palace balconies or from Ambrai Ghat across the water.

    10. Bagore ki Haveli

This 18th-century haveli on Gangaur Ghat has been restored as a museum of Mewari life, with furniture, costumes and a large collection of turbans. In the evening it hosts a folk dance and puppet show, usually around 7 pm, which is one of the most enjoyable hours you can spend in Udaipur. Arrive early for a good seat.

    11. Sajjangarh, the Monsoon Palace

Sajjangarh sits on a hilltop west of the city and was built in the late 19th century, partly to watch the monsoon clouds roll in. Today people come for the sunset, when the lakes and the city turn gold below. The road up is steep and narrow; shared vehicles run from the gate at the bottom. Plan to arrive about an hour before sunset.

    12. Moti Magri and the Maharana Pratap Memorial

On a hill above Fateh Sagar, Moti Magri has a bronze statue of Maharana Pratap on his horse Chetak, gardens and views over the lake. It is a good introduction to the history of Mewar before a day trip to Haldighati or Kumbhalgarh.

    Temples

    13. Jagdish Temple

Built in 1651, the Jagdish Temple is the largest temple in the old city, a few minutes' walk from the City Palace. Climb the steps past the stone elephants to see the carved mandapa and the black stone image of Lord Vishnu. Mornings are calmest; dress modestly.

    14. Karni Mata Temple and the ropeway

The ropeway from Doodh Talai climbs to the Mansapurna Karni Mata temple on Machla Magra hill. The ride takes a few minutes and the views over Pichola, the City Palace and the hills are among the best in the city, especially in the evening.

    15. Neemach Mata Temple

This hilltop temple above Fateh Sagar is reached by a steep walking path. Go early in the morning for the climb and the view over the lake as the city wakes up.

    16. Eklingji Temple (22 km)

Eklingji, at Kailashpuri north of Udaipur, is the temple of Lord Shiva as the ruling deity of Mewar, a large complex of shrines in carved stone. Combine it with the ancient Sas-Bahu temples at nearby Nagda. We also list a villa near Eklingji.

    17. Ambika Mata and Ahar

For temple architecture without the crowds, the old temples and the cenotaphs of the Mewar royal family at Ahar, on the eastern edge of the city, are worth an hour. There is a small archaeological museum at the site.

    Gardens, museums and culture

    18. Saheliyon ki Bari

The "garden of the maidens" was laid out in the 18th century with lotus pools, marble elephants and fountains that still run. It is a short, pleasant stop, best in the morning before it fills with tour groups.

    19. Shilpgram

Shilpgram is a crafts village on the western edge of the city with traditional houses from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Goa and Maharashtra, artisans at work and folk performances. Its big crafts fair, the Shilpgram Utsav, is held at the end of December and is one of the best times to visit.

    20. Vintage Car Museum

The royal family's collection of vintage cars, including Rolls-Royces and Cadillacs, is housed near the Garden Hotel. It takes under an hour and is a hit with children and car lovers.

    21. Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal

This folk art museum has costumes, masks, instruments and a large puppet collection, with short puppet shows through the day.

    22. Gulab Bagh

Gulab Bagh, also called Sajjan Niwas garden, is the city's largest park, with old trees, a library and a toy train for children. It makes a good morning walk.

    23. Sajjangarh Biological Park

At the foot of the Monsoon Palace hill, this park has lions, tigers, leopards and other animals in large open enclosures. Combine a morning here with the palace at sunset on another day, or plan a long afternoon for both.

    Sunset points and viewpoints

    24. Ambrai Ghat

Across Lake Pichola from the City Palace, Ambrai Ghat has the classic view of the palace lit up after dark. Come at sunset and stay for the lights. The lakeside restaurants here are popular, so book a table on weekends.

    25. Gangaur Ghat

Gangaur Ghat, next to Bagore ki Haveli, is the main ghat of the old city, where the Gangaur festival processions reach the water in spring. In the evening it is a lovely place to sit by the lake before the folk show.

    26. Sajjangarh, Karni Mata and Badi Lake

For the widest views, choose the Monsoon Palace, the Karni Mata ropeway or Badi Lake. Each gives a different sunset: the palace looks over the whole valley, the ropeway over the old city and the lake, and Badi Lake over water and hills with almost no crowds.

    Two more places locals love

    31. Bahubali Hills

Bahubali Hills is a hilltop viewpoint above Badi Lake that became famous on social media. A short but steep walk of about 20 to 30 minutes takes you to the top, where the lake, the dam and the Aravalli hills spread out below. Go for sunrise or an hour before sunset, wear proper shoes and carry water; there is little shade. Several of our stays near Badi Lake and in Amberi are a short drive away.

    32. Sukhadia Circle

Sukhadia Circle is a large roundabout in the north of the city with a pond, a tall fountain and paddle boats. In the evening it fills with families, snack carts and balloon sellers. It is not a major sight, but an easy, cheerful hour with children on the way back from Fateh Sagar.

    Markets and food

    27. Hathi Pol, Bada Bazaar and the clock tower

The lanes around Hathi Pol, Bada Bazaar and the clock tower are where you buy textiles, bandhani, silver jewellery, leather mojaris, miniature paintings and wooden toys. Bargaining is normal in the smaller shops. Late afternoon is the best time, before the evening rush.

    28. Fateh Sagar food stalls

Evenings at Fateh Sagar mean street food: kachori, mirchi vada, corn, chaat and kulfi along the lake road.

    29. Rajasthani thali

Try dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, ker sangri and malpua at least once. Many villas can also arrange home-style Rajasthani meals; check the listing.

    30. Nathdwara (48 km)

The temple town of Nathdwara, home of the Shrinathji temple, makes a half-day trip. On the way you pass the giant Shiva statue on the hill outside the town. Read more in our guide to places to visit near Udaipur.

    Getting around Udaipur

    • Auto-rickshaws and app cabs are the easiest way to move between the old city, Fateh Sagar and the outer sights. Agree on a fare or use the meter or app.
    • Walking works in the old city: the City Palace, Jagdish Temple, Gangaur Ghat and Bagore ki Haveli are all within a few minutes of each other.
    • A hired car with driver is the best option for the Monsoon Palace, Badi Lake and the day trips, and for groups staying at villas outside the centre.
    • Parking in the old city lanes is difficult. If you drive yourself, park near the City Palace or Fateh Sagar and walk.

    When to visit

October to March is the most comfortable season, with warm days and cool nights. July to September brings the monsoon, when the lakes fill and the hills turn green. April to June is hot. Our month-by-month guide, best time to visit Udaipur, covers festivals, crowds and prices.

    Tips for first-time visitors

    • Start early. The City Palace and Jagdish Temple are calm at opening time and crowded by 11 am.
    • Book boat rides in the morning for an evening slot, especially on weekends and holidays.
    • Dress modestly at temples, cover shoulders and knees, and remove shoes where asked.
    • Carry cash in small notes for autos, street food and small shops, though most places take UPI.
    • Agree on auto fares before you get in, or use an app cab.
    • Be polite but firm with touts offering shops or "special" boat tickets; buy tickets only at official counters.
    • Drink plenty of water from March to June, and plan indoor sights or rest for the afternoon.
    • Photography: some museums charge a camera fee and some temples do not allow photos inside. Look for signs.

Fateh Sagar stays lively until late with food stalls and families on the lake road. If you are staying at a villa outside the city, plan your evening in the old city first and drive back once the lanes have emptied; the city is generally calm and safe at night.
