The 12th, 13th and 14th form a three-day weekend at the start. The 25th, 26th and 27th form another at the end. In between sits a stretch that, for most families in Maharashtra and increasingly beyond, is simply the busiest social fortnight of the year.
Two very different bookings
Ganpati bookings split cleanly into two types, and the mistake people make is searching as if they were the same thing. The first is a family that keeps Ganpati at home and wants somewhere for the visarjan-week gathering — an afternoon or an evening with the extended family, food, and space for children. This is a day booking. What matters is the day-time guest limit, the outside-food rules, covered seating and parking. The second is a group getting out of the city precisely because the fortnight is chaotic — friends or a couple of families taking the three-day weekend and going to the hills or the coast. If you are staying near the city
The belt within an hour of Mumbai and Thane is where most of the day-booking demand sits. Thane is the natural first look — seventeen properties across Badlapur, Kalyan, Murbad, Titwala, Shahapur, Ambarnath and Bhiwandi, most with a pool and a garden.

- Karjat — quieter and better value, particularly for groups above twenty.
- Igatpuri — the most dramatic scenery of the three and the smallest inventory, so effectively a booking you make weeks ahead or not at all.
- Alibaug and Raigad — the coastal alternative, less crowded than the ghats over the festival.
Three things to confirm before you pay
- Whether the property permits an idol and puja on site. Most do, but it is a specific question and worth asking rather than assuming — particularly around what happens with the immersion, which you will almost certainly need to arrange off the property.
- The rules on outside food, cooking and catering. Ganpati bookings are food-heavy by definition. Some properties allow you full use of the kitchen; some allow food to be brought in but not cooked; a few operate their own catering and do not permit outside food at all. - Sound and timing restrictions. A number of properties — especially those in residential pockets — stop music at 10:00 PM, and the rule is stated on the listing. For a celebration that traditionally runs late, read it first.
Beyond Maharashtra

A note on booking windows

What to confirm about the puja itself
If the booking is built around bringing an idol to the property, three questions matter and none of them is standard across listings:
- Is an idol and puja permitted on the property? Most owners are entirely comfortable with it. A few properties have their own temple area on site — one farmhouse near Sanand and one on Ajmer Road in Jaipur both list one — which changes the arrangement considerably for the better.
- What about the immersion? You will almost certainly need to arrange this away from the property. Owners generally will not permit visarjan into a private pool, for reasons that are obvious once stated, and local water bodies have their own rules and timings during the festival.
- Are diyas, camphor and an open flame acceptable indoors? Usually yes, with sensible care. Ask specifically if the property has an indoor hall you intend to use.
