Pet-friendly is a checkbox on a listing, not a guarantee of a good stay. What to ask, what usually goes wrong, and which kinds of property genuinely work.
Why this category suits dogs and hotels do not
If you have a dog, you already know the problem with travelling in India: the hotels that accept pets are few, expensive, and usually mean a room rather than any outdoor space. A farmhouse inverts that entirely. The whole property is yours, there is a garden, there are no other guests in a corridor, and nobody is anxious about the lift. A meaningful share of the properties we list permit pets — across the properties we looked at closely for this piece, roughly two in five did. It is stated on the listing rather than left to chance. But "pets allowed" is a permission, not a description. It tells you the owner will not turn you away. It does not tell you whether the property is a good place for a dog to spend a weekend, and those are different questions.
What to ask before booking
Is the compound actually enclosed?
The single most important question and the one almost nobody asks. A farmhouse with an open boundary onto fields is a lovely place for a dog and a genuinely stressful one for you. Ask about the boundary wall or fencing, and about the gate.
Is there an additional charge, and is it refundable?
Some owners charge a pet fee, some increase the security deposit, some do neither. All three are normal; being surprised at check-in is not.
Are pets allowed everywhere, or only outdoors?
A common condition is that pets stay out of bedrooms or off furniture. Reasonable, and much easier to comply with if you know before you pack.
Are there resident animals?
Many farm properties have a caretaker's dog, or cows, or chickens. For some dogs that is fine and for others it is the entire weekend ruined. Ask.
What is the pool rule?
Most owners do not want dogs in the pool. Fur and filtration do not mix, and the cleaning cost lands on the deposit.

Properties that state a pet policy clearly
A sample across cities, all of which list pets as permitted:

What actually goes wrong
Three things, in order of frequency. The dog gets out. An unfamiliar property, a gate propped open while cars are unloaded, and a dog that has been in a car for two hours. This is the reason the boundary question matters more than any other. The deposit gets docked. Usually for something small — a scratched door, hair in the pool filter, a stained rug. Bring a sheet for wherever the dog sleeps and it mostly disappears as a risk. And the heat. Farm properties in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Telangana get hot, and shade in a garden is not the same as air conditioning. If your dog is a large or thick-coated breed, check that pets are permitted in the air-conditioned rooms, not just on the property. In September and October this matters considerably more than it does in December.

The best destinations for it
Anywhere with a genuine walk from the property is worth prioritising, because the alternative is a dog in a compound for two days.
Karjat and Palghar are good for this — rural, quiet roads, and water. Lonavala is walkable in the right areas and not in others. Navsari and the Ubharat beach are excellent in the cooler months. Around cities, the larger-plot properties in Gurugram and Moinabad give you enough space that a walk is not essential.
The drive, which is half the problem
Most of what goes wrong on a trip with a dog happens in the car rather than at the property, and a farmhouse booking usually involves two to four hours of it.
- Travel on an empty-ish stomach. A full meal an hour before a ghat road is how car sickness happens.
- Stop every ninety minutes, somewhere the dog can actually get out safely — not a highway shoulder.
- Carry water and a bowl within reach, not in the boot under the luggage.
- Do not leave the dog in a parked car. Obvious, routinely ignored, and in Gujarat, Rajasthan or Telangana between March and June it is genuinely dangerous within minutes.
- Arrive in daylight if you can. An unfamiliar property, an unfamiliar boundary and darkness is the combination that produces a lost dog.
None of this is specific to farmhouses. It is simply that this category involves more driving than a city hotel does, and the driving is the part people plan least.
Being a guest the owner will host again
Pet-friendly is a permission that owners extend and can withdraw, and the properties that offer it are a minority. It is worth not spending it. Bring a sheet or an old blanket for wherever the dog sleeps, and use it. This single habit removes most of what gets deducted from a security deposit — hair on upholstery, a mark on a mattress, a stained rug. Keep the dog out of the pool unless you have been told otherwise. Fur clogs filters, the cleaning is chargeable, and it is the most common reason a permission gets withdrawn. Ask about the caretaker's own animals before you arrive, and about feeding times if there are cows or chickens on the property. Farm properties often have resident animals and a first encounter is better supervised than discovered. And tell the owner you are bringing a dog when you book, not when you arrive. Every property that permits pets expects to be told, several adjust the room allocation because of it, and a few charge a small additional amount that is much better agreed in advance. The wider point is that this permission exists because enough guests have been careful with it. Farmhouse owners are, on the whole, more relaxed about dogs than hotels are — the property is already outdoors, already robust, and already yours alone for the night. What they are wary of is not the dog but the assumption. Ask, tell, bring a sheet, keep the dog out of the pool, and you will find the category substantially easier to travel in with an animal than almost any other kind of accommodation in India. One practical addition. If your dog is anxious in new places, the same property for two nights is far better than one, and a weekday booking is better than a weekend — fewer arrivals next door, less noise, and a caretaker with time to be helpful rather than turning over three bookings in a day. The second morning is usually when the dog finally settles, which is an argument against the single-night trip in India.
