One day picnic spots near Delhi

    1. A private farmhouse day picnic (Noida, Gurugram, south Delhi)

The most popular one day outing for Delhi families and offices is not a sight at all: it is a day at a private farmhouse. You book the whole property for a day slot, typically from morning to evening, and get a lawn, a pool (often with a separate kids' pool), a sound system, indoor games and space to cook or order in. It is ideal for birthdays, kitty parties, reunions and team outings, and it works for every age, from toddlers in the kids' pool to grandparents on the shaded sit-out. BookMyFarm has 70 such stays in Delhi NCR; see the family-friendly farmhouses and read how day picnic and overnight slots work.

    2. Sultanpur National Park

About 45 km away on the Farrukhnagar road, Sultanpur is at its best from November to March, when migratory birds crowd the lake. Walk the trail around the water in the early morning, then drive 10 km on to Farrukhnagar for the Sheesh Mahal and the octagonal baoli. Back in Gurugram by lunch.

    3. Damdama Lake and Sohna

A lake in the Aravalli foothills, fullest after the monsoon, with rocky hills around it. Combine it with the hot spring tank at Sohna and lunch at a farmhouse on Sohna Road. Our Damdama, Sohna and Sultanpur guide has a full timetable.

    4. Surajkund and the Faridabad Aravallis

The ancient stepped reservoir of Surajkund is a peaceful stop outside the February crafts mela, and the Aravalli hills around it hide Peacock Lake and the sacred grove of Mangar Bani. See our Faridabad guide.

    5. Okhla Bird Sanctuary and the Noida Botanical Garden

A short morning: waterbirds on the Yamuna marshes in winter, then the large Botanical Garden in Noida, both near the Magenta Line metro. More in our Noida guide.

    6. Heritage Transport Museum, Taoru

Vintage cars, motorcycles, railway saloons and an aircraft under one roof: a reliable day out with children, especially in the heat or rain.

    7. Aravalli Biodiversity Park and Leisure Valley, Gurugram

Green, close and free or cheap, these are good for a short family walk. Our places to visit in Gurgaon guide lists more.

What to carry on a one day trip

    • Water, snacks and a cap; Delhi's sun is strong for most of the year.
    • Binoculars for the bird parks in winter.
    • Swimwear, towels and a change of clothes for a farmhouse day, and sunscreen.
    • Socks or comfortable footwear for temples, where you leave shoes outside.
    • Cash for parking and small stalls, ID for monuments, and a power bank.
    • In winter, a warm layer: mornings and evenings are cold and foggy.

    Timing tips

    • Start by 6 or 7 am for anything more than an hour away; the city's exits jam after 8.30 am.
    • Avoid returning on NH 48 and NH 44 between 6 and 9 pm on Sundays.
    • For a farmhouse day picnic, confirm the slot timings, the guest limit and whether outside food and music are allowed when you book.
    • From late October to January, check the air quality and fog forecast; an outdoor day is best on a clear day.
